Yard Kings grew out of its director Vasco Alexandre's desire to write about the subject of domestic abuse, and his fascination with the view of the world through a child's eyes. I accepted a lot of collaboration from as many people as possible during the process". The story focuses on 11-year-old Ellie, who can't stand her mother's new partner. There's a sequence involving an activated car-crusher, and to film a scene with the young actor playing Ellie's friend on top of a truck cabin, the crew worked for days to make sure it was safe. The child actors were completely opposite characters, very shy and very confident - "I had to talk to them in separate ways" says Vasco. "But in the end I saw a chemistry. I’m really glad we cast them". Producer Billy King recalls being “shocked” when they won the RTS Award. Yes, the program is designed to support emerging writers, so it’s completely fine if you’ve never written anything before. We’ll primarily evaluate the potential of the project rather than the writer’s experience. How many times can I apply? You can apply with as many projects as you like within the same season. If you submit more than one project, feel free to contact us for a discount code. Which projects should not be submitted? We are unable to select scripts that: Are commercial in nature, such as advertisements or music videos. Are primarily created as art installations intended for display in museums. How far along do I have to be with my project to get selected? There’s no requirement for how far along your project needs to be. We primarily assess the concept and its potential. Even if you're working with a very early draft, we’ll have development sessions to help shape it in the right direction. Can I direct the film if my project goes into production? The program is designed with writers in mind, and we are only able to bring the selected writer to Copenhagen for a few days. As remote directing can be challenging, we generally prefer to collaborate with a local director. However, we will take the candidate’s directing experience into account, and in some cases, co-directing it's a possibility. Does the film have to be shot in Copenhagen? No, but we strongly prefer to shoot in Scandinavia, as our partners are based here and we can make the most of our local resources. This also allows us to work closely with the team and ensure the best possible outcome for the project. Can I apply with a co-writer or a producer? Writing teams are welcome to apply. However, please note that Franzi’s in-house production team will handle the film’s production.
